Writing the Rhythms of Rural Life: My Sister to Our Mother

Kidwell Farm Park, Frying Pan Park, things to do near Reston and Herndon, Childrens activities near Reston and Herndon

No, this picture does not represent the snowbound season my sister writes about below. It is Kidwell Farm Park in Herndon VA

If you live in the  Reston area can still get both your country and city fix. 45 minutes east takes you into Washington DC and 45 minutes west or north takes you into rural bliss. Kidwell Farm Park in Herndon is only 15 minutes away from almost anywhere in Restn and it can provide you with a great fun day out with animals, old farm buildings and farm equipment including pigeons. We have taken our children here for 10 years and still stop by occasionaly when the need to touch my rural roots is upon me. The following has nothing to do with Reston or homes for sale...I just came across this letter from my sister writing to our elderly mother. She is an excellent wordsmith and can create country living word pictures that tie us all together as a family.

My Sister Writes to our Mother

Hazel Raises Goats"Last time I mentioned how clean the snow is here, but what I forgot to add was, when driving, sometimes it is hard to tell where the road is, when there are open fields on either side. Russ has special glasses that make it easier…and that situation doesn’t last long, because you can see the dirt /salt mix after the plows are out, and the car and truck tracks.
I am still knitting baby hats in the evening. I added up the ones I had finished and sent to the hospital…over 50…. in one sense they are like the afghan quilt patterns you used to knit Mom, …there are many different options, so there is always something new and different to look forward to, and a number of different choices regarding yarn weight and color. Come spring, I probably won’t have time to do much knitting because there will be lots of
Heather rests after showing 10 houses
outside work to do and all the other tasks will have to be shifted to the evenings. (Already under the snow are lots of willow branches just waiting for me to rake them up…on windy days, more keep falling). I always wished to have a weeping willow, but had no idea all the work that would go with it!

Also, come spring Russ will have lots of clean up to do. He likes to mow lawns like Daddy did and make paths like Uncle Archie…another thing I enjoy. (It also makes it easier to reach pick the many boysenberries in the summer.)
Each season has its down side…but the thing to do is enjoy the good things each has to offer rather than just enduring one while waiting for the next."

My sister to our mother…writing the rhythms of rural life shared; growing together.
